Pho Bac

Tucked away in the vibrant heart of Montreal at 1016 St Laurent Blvd, Pho Bac is where locals and visitors alike come for an authentic Vietnamese food fix. As soon as you step inside, you're welcomed by the cozy, no-frills vibe that makes this spot feel more like a hidden gem than a mainstream eatery. Whether you're craving a quick bite or looking for something nourishing and satisfying, Pho Bac delivers the real deal.

Let’s talk pho - because that’s where this place truly shines. The broth? Clear, aromatic, and soul-warming, simmered for hours the traditional way. Each bowl is generously packed with tender slices of beef or chicken, fresh herbs, and perfectly cooked rice noodles. Add a splash of lime, a hint of chili, and you’ve got a steamy bowl that comforts in every way.

But pho isn’t the only hero on the menu. If you’re in a hurry, their quick bites are perfect - think spring rolls with crispy wrappers and soft, savory fillings, or light vermicelli dishes that balance flavors without ever feeling heavy. Health-conscious? Pho Bac has you covered with healthy options that still taste like indulgence. The freshness in each dish is unmistakable, from crisp bean sprouts to aromatic basil leaves.

On chilly days or sleepy mornings, a hot Vietnamese coffee hits the spot - strong, rich, and sweetened just right with condensed milk. It’s a must-try, whether you’re dining in, grabbing it to go, or ordering with your delivery.

Service here is smooth and straightforward. You can dine in for a relaxed experience, take it away if you're on the move, or simply order delivery to enjoy that warm, pho-filled comfort right at home. Pho Bac doesn’t try too hard - it doesn’t need to. The food speaks for itself, and it speaks Vietnamese fluently.

Pho Bac has become my go-to place ever since after the pandemic . I didn't know why I discovered this place sooner, maybe because its not so cool decor , my bad , my bad! The spicy beef pho ( 顺化牛肉粉bun bo hue) with extra spicy chili oil is my favorite of all time ! Remember, ask for extra spicy if you like hot and nice pho just like me ! It reminds me of Sichuan food somehow, full of flavors and spicy oil, just so ! Good! The special pho , aka the classic, is just tasty and classic! Some days, if I'm feel like something lighter, I'll order a classic pho, sip a couple of spoon soups, then add hoisin sauce and siracha spicy sauce aside, eat with a little pho noodles and a piece of thin beef together! So good! The service is ..emmm...super fast but doesn't feel like a service. You know what I mean. At this kind of restaurant, all it matters is the Food !

Restaurant with around 30 tables on bld. St Laurent since 27 years. The little details count to maintain a loyal and satisfied clientele in these crisis times, knowing that I have tried ALL the tonkinoise restaurants in St Laurent (in the surroundings of the quartier chinois) and this is my prefered spot. There is also a big variety of other Vietnamese dishes. This is one of the rare places that includes tea, which is more than enough for one person. It can be repeated as needed. But also each table has its own napkin dispenser, without being stingy and having to ask for another one every time, as is the habit everywhere in these days of economic restrictions. And since the specialty is tonkinoise and my favorite dish (a medium beef is 16), it is abundant, tasty and well seasoned bouillon. With large portions of meat, dressings, according to specialty, in a pleasant, bright and clean place. By now, the parking spots are very rare, for the street reparations. I have always been lucky because the waiters have been diligents, helpful and available. For all this, I return every time I visit Old Montreal... !

Food was fantastic. Very authentic. They had a few employees who spike English so no issue with communication. Cost with tip was CAD 69 for two pho bowls, a shrimp vermicelli bowl and a pork vermicelli bowl. They have gluten free choices but it's mostly limited to pho or the soup options.

Great flavour broth, not salty, just right. Friendly, quick service, third time here. Got the medium Chicken Pho this time. Complimentary tea every time. Way better than pho bang new york across the street.

We chose Pho Bac on a whim after a quick search while visiting Montreal, and wow, we were not disappointed. The food was amazing, the service was great and helpful. Would definitely recommend it to anyone that wants a great Pho, that’s full of flavour and very delicious.

Authentic pho 100%. I'm from the west coast, visited in 2019, had a bowl that made me want to come back for round two. Finally got a chance to visit in Oct 2024. Unlike most places, the broth here is hearty and not overly salty, the meat is tender, and the proportions are extremely generous. An XL bowl size is a good amount of food to share with someone. Hai, one of the people who work there, actually remembered me from five years ago. We had a good chat before we left. I'm writing this review from Vancouver because I'm hungry and thinking about Pho Bac. I can't wait to go back. This is the place for pho. It's just incredible.

Oh my gosh this had to have been the best pho that I’ve had in a very long time. The broth was outstandingly flavourful and staff were extremely attentive. Still craving this! Edit: I came back 3 years later and enjoyed the pho dac biet, while also being greeted by the sweetest gentlemen who took time to inquire about my background and sent me off with candy and well wishes. It was a very heartwarming experience!
